Dopamine detox

Wall Stare · minutes, not a weekend

Most apps filed under “dopamine detox” are blockers. They take the phone off you and hope the gap fills itself. This one does the opposite: it hands you the gap and nothing else. A reminder arrives, you put the phone down across the room, and you stare at a wall for ten minutes.

What is a dopamine detox?

A deliberate gap in high-stimulation input — in practice, screens. The popular version runs for a day or a weekend and comes with rules about food, music and company. That is most of why people read about one and never do one.

The version this app implements starts at ten minutes with no screen, no sound and no input at all, and goes as long as you want it to. There is no list to follow and nothing to give up afterwards.

Does a dopamine detox actually work?

Ten empty minutes interrupt the reach for a feed and give your attention somewhere to rest that is not a screen. You come back calmer than you sat down.

It works because it is short. A weekend cleanse is a thing you plan and abandon. Ten minutes is a thing you do on a Tuesday and again on a Wednesday.

How do you do a dopamine detox?

That is the whole method and you do not need this app to follow it. What the app adds is the reminder that starts it, a widget and a Lock Screen control so it takes one tap, and a record of the minutes written to Apple Health.

What it will not do

It does not want your attention. Specifically:

Nothing you do in it leaves the phone. The privacy policy is short for the same reason.
