Wall Stare

Stare at a wall

Wall Stare · how to be bored again

People have forgotten how to be bored. Most of us can no longer sit alone in silence with our own thoughts — the phone comes out the moment there is a gap. A wall is the simplest correction available and it costs nothing.

Why a wall and not a window?

The wall is not a gimmick. It is the only thing in an ordinary room that reliably gives you nothing. A window has something to watch, so it becomes watching. Closed eyes turn into a nap. Anything else in the room is still something specific.

A blank wall guarantees no new input for the length of the session, which leaves you alone with your own thoughts. If you have blank walls, use a door, the ceiling or the floor instead.

Is staring at a wall good for you?

A blank wall is not medicine. What it is, is the cheapest way to find out what your own attention does when it is handed no input at all. If you have not tried it recently, that is not what you expect.

The first few minutes are usually uncomfortable. There is a strong pull to check something and a run of small errands that suddenly seem urgent. That discomfort is not the method going wrong. It is the part that does the work and it passes.

How do you get bored on purpose?

You do not need an app for any of that. What Wall Stare adds is the reminder that starts it, one tap from a widget or the Lock Screen, and a sound at the end so you are not counting. It lets you track your sessions and block apps during your stare.

How long should you stare at a wall for?

Start with five or ten minutes. Long enough that the first restless stretch passes and something else starts; short enough that you will do it again tomorrow rather than treat it as an event. Go longer once sitting still stops being the hard part — sessions go up to thirty minutes, and you can type a longer one.

What happens while you stare

Nothing, which is the point. Then not quite nothing. You will hear yourself think. Ideas you have been putting off arrive unprompted. Some sessions are dull the whole way through and those count too.
